ISPA Gets Stuck on Online Safety

The non-profit industry body representing the lion’s share of South Africa’s Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has some practical advice for children, parents, teachers and new Internet users available as downloadable and printed posters.

Protecting children in cyberspace, says the Internet Service Providers’ Association of SA (ISPA), is all about Education (“Talk to your child about the risk of being online”), Awareness (“Be aware of what your child is doing online”) and Privacy (“Teach your child not to share personal information with strangers”).

ISPA has collated these common sense, yet effective, messages into sets of online safety posters available in pre-packed tubes of three posters that also help protect adult Internet users.

ISPA’s Online Safety Project posters are arranged according to themes endorsed by the Film & Publications Board (FPB), the SA Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) and the iCode initiative.

The online safety posters are available free and each tube contains one each of ISPA’s ‘Protecting Children’, ‘Safe Money’ and ‘Zombie Botnet’ posters. The latter is only available in English while the other posters are available in all 11 of South Africa’s official languages.

The advice dispensed by ISPA and its online safety partners addresses the common problems of fake banking sites and the infection of computers by malicious software, amongst other increasingly-serious online safety issues. Additional online safety posters will be added by ISPA over the coming months and the Association invites as many South Africans as possible to download and display the posters across the length and breadth of the country.
